My Favorite Things: Entertainment, Life Hack, Fashion Tip

Hi there!

Sorry I’ve been a little MIA lately. In case you haven’t heard or experienced it yourself, moving takes a toll! And Mama is a bit tired. And I can’t find anything. And I keep getting cardboard cuts. Wah-wah.

Instead of taking an entire post to whine about the intense struggles of packing up the life of a family-of-four and moving north two states, I thought I’d share a few things I like. I’ve got an entertainment recommendation, a life hack, and a fashion tip for ya.

Entertainment recommendation
The Umbrella Academy
If you subscribe to Netflix, chances are you’ve seen advertisements for The Umbrella Academy. It’s a TV series based on a comic book series of the same name. Basically, 43 women around the world gave birth to children in 1989, but none of the women were pregnant before giving birth. The children seem to have super powers, and an eccentric billionaire with a hidden agenda adopts seven of them. We first meet them in present day where they’re all dysfunctional, emotionally maimed “adults” having to deal with their adoptive father’s death. But it’s also really funny. Promise!

Here’s my disclaimer: Definitely watch this show after the kids go to bed. The language and violence can get a little rough. However (I always feel funny about putting a “however” after a disclaimer like that), it’s a clever show with interesting relationship dynamics, some brilliant acting (looking at you, Klaus/Robert Sheehan!), and well-executed visual style. Both my husband and I enjoyed most moments and look forward to season 2.

Life Hack
Cracking an egg on the counter
I can still remember my grandmother teaching me how to crack an egg on the side of a Pyrex mixing bowl before inserting my thumbs to release the yolk. Well, no offense to the memory of my beloved grandmother, but I’ve discovered a better way! My Food Network magazine had a quick tip telling me to crack eggs on the counter instead of the edge of the bowl. And, lo and behold, it works! For some reason, the egg colliding with the flat surface shatters the shell perfectly (as I’ve learned when accidentally dropping eggs). I’ve been fishing many less egg shards out of my culinary concoctions these days.

Fashion Tip
The end of the skinny-jeans fad
As I don’t read fashion magazines and I don’t pay much attention to trends, I’m probably the last person who should be giving a fashion tip. However! I spent an hour at Loft today, and I’m thrilled to announce that there were alternatives to skinny-styled pants! I saw at least three other pants styles! Now, skinny pants have grown on me, but I’m a gal with some curvature. And, let’s be honest, not every lady needs to be wearing all things “skinny.” I don’t mind the skinny look, but why can’t we also have options? I don’t need bell-bottoms, but maybe we could add an inch or two to let my calves and ankles breathe? Good gravy.

Know of any life hacks or fashion-forward tips to pass along?

Currently Reading
Rich People Problems by Kevin Kwan – Y’all. I love this Crazy Rich Asians trilogy. It’s like reading tabloids and gossip columns on the insanely wealthy (not that I do this, but I imagine it’s feeds the same drama monster in my brain). Mr. Kwan does an admirable job weaving together the drama, the glitz, the glam, and the backstabbing of the “fictional” Asian mega-wealthy. Love it.
